Selection Process and Expected Duration for Sworn Positions


  1. Physical Agility Test
  2. Written Test
  3. Oral Interview
  4. Background Investigation including a Computer Voice Stress Examination and Captain’s Oral Interview
  5. Psychological Examination
  6. Medical Examination

Police Recruit Applicants

The City of Garden Grove will administer the physical ability test and the written test.

Lateral Applicants

A Personnel sergeant, under the direction of the City’s Human Resources Department, administers the physical agility test. The City waives the written test for a lateral police officer applicant.

Academy Trained

If the applicant is attending a P.O.S.T. certified police academy at the time of application, the City will waive the physical agility test and the written test if the applicant has completed them as part of their academy training and the City receives certified scores from the police academy.

If the applicant has already graduated from a P.O.S.T. certified police academy at the time of application, he/she will have to complete the physical agility test and written test.

Reapplication

Applicants who fail any part of the selection process will not be considered for appointment. Those applicants who fail the following tests in the selection process may re-apply as indicated:

Physical Agility Test May apply as often as given.


Written TestMay apply as often as given - once the applicant passes the test, the passing score is good for twelve months.


Oral Board Applicant must wait twelve months.


Background InvestigationApplicant must wait twelve months.


Psychological Examination Applicant must wait twelve months.

Duration

The selection process takes approximately 180 days from initial application to final selection/hiring.
