City to Hold Plaque Dedication for Zlaket's Market
On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the Garden Grove City Council and Garden Grove Downtown Commission will honor Zlaket’s Market and the Zlaket family with a plaque dedication and unveiling. The ceremony will take place at 5:00 p.m., in front of Phin Smith coffee shop, at 12921 Main Street, where Zlaket’s Market—Garden Grove’s oldest family-owned-and-operated business—stood for 87 years.
Opened in 1927 by Leo Zlaket Sr. and his wife, Mary, Zlaket’s Market passed through generations of family ownership, with Leo Zlaket Jr. and his wife, Virginia, becoming proprietors in 1988. Known for its top-quality meats, fresh deli, ready-to-eat meals, and hometown atmosphere, Zlaket’s Market became a recognized business icon in the community. It survived the 1933 Long Beach earthquake and the Great Depression. The market closed in November 2014 after 87 years in business.
Included in the program will be remarks by Garden Grove Mayor Steve Jones and Virginia Zlaket, wife of the late Leo Zlaket Jr.
