The City of Garden Grove celebrated the reopening of Woodbury Park on Saturday, August 29, welcoming several hundred community members throughout the day to experience the newly renovated park during a free community celebration.

The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a day of family-friendly activities, including free recreational swimming, water aerobics, fitness demonstrations, skateboarding demonstrations, basketball, a live DJ, giveaways, and complimentary food. The celebration gave residents an opportunity to explore Woodbury Park’s newly renovated amenities and enjoy the park with their families and neighbors.

“This project is an investment in Woodbury Park, but more importantly, it is an investment in the people of Garden Grove,” said Garden Grove Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein. “Woodbury Park is a great example of what can happen when community input, thoughtful planning, partnerships, and investment come together. We are excited to see residents enjoying this beautiful park and all it has to offer.”

The fully remodeled 3.8-acre Woodbury Park now features a recreational swimming pool, pool house building, basketball courts, a skate plaza, outdoor fitness equipment, picnic shelters, a walking trail, park lighting, and two jungle-themed playgrounds designed for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12. The playgrounds include colorful play structures, a multi-person swing and seesaw, interactive activity panels, and musical sound elements.

The improvements were completed through the Woodbury Park Revitalization and Expansion Project, an $11 million investment funded in part by California’s Proposition 68 Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program. The project was identified through the City’s Parks, Recreation & Facilities Master Plan and was shaped by years of community input.

Community engagement for the project began with the City’s efforts to develop a 15-year Parks, Recreation & Facilities Master Plan. Residents participated in surveys and community meetings beginning in 2018 and continuing through 2020, including meetings specifically focused on the future renovation of Woodbury Park. Community participation helped inform the City’s grant application and the vision for the park’s transformation.

The community’s involvement continued throughout the project. In 2025, the City partnered with the Woodbury Elementary School Boys and Girls Club on a wildlife drawing contest, with winning student artwork selected to be permanently inscribed on the reverse side of a monumental bronze sculpture by artist Jennifer Stewart. The sculpture will be completed and installed at Woodbury Park as part of the project.

The reopening of Woodbury Park marks the completion of a major investment in the community and provides residents with expanded opportunities for recreation, connection, and family activities.
