History
In 1997 the City of Garden Grove took a proactive approach to developing youth potential, supporting families, and developing communities by adopting the Family Opportunities Creating Unity and Support (FOCUS) philosophy. This philosophy led the City to convene an informal group of service providers for the purpose of community resource and information sharing. The group became the FOCUS Collaborative.
When the Families and Communities Together (FaCT) Request for Proposal for Family Resource Centers was released in 1999, the FOCUS Collaborative and the City of Garden Grove were uniquely positioned to apply for funding. The City established the Magnolia Park Family Resource Center (MPFRC) in response to the community needs for family support and prevention services. Since 1999, the MPFRC has provided the residents of Garden Grove with vital community services to achieve it’s mission of “building healthy communities one family at a time.”
Through its partnerships with funded and non-funded partners, MPFRC is able to offer essential core services to individuals and families.
MPFRC’s Core Services
Comprehensive Case Management Team Services
This multidisciplinary team meets on a weekly basis to assess families who are facing multiple needs and barriers. The goal is to link each family to services either at the FRC or in the community to meet those needs. Family members are invited to participate in the meetings and share thoughts regarding their strengths, needs and capacity to participate in services.
Information & Referral Services
The staff at Magnolia Park FRC is committed to providing community members with resource information and referral. Whether services are provided on-site, at a partner family resource center, or other community agency, no consumer leaves empty handed when seeking resource information. MPFRC has developed a comprehensive resource directory with information for those seeking emergency shelter, legal aid, rental assistance, mental health services, parenting other education programs, job training, recreational programs and more.
Individualized Educational Plan Clinics & Workshops
Magnolia Park Family Resource Center has partnered with Team of Advocates for Special Kids (TASK) to provide Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) clinics and workshops. The IEP clinics are designated for families who need assistance with IEP meetings and understanding basic rights. IEP consultations are by appointment only. They are conducted in English or Spanish. Parents are requested to bring in all of their child's educational records for review by trained staff members with experience in attending IEP meetings and understanding of the laws serving individuals with special needs. Information workshops on the IEP Assessment Process, Rights and Strategies are also offered regularly.
Teen and Youth Program
Magnolia Park FRC offers a youth group that focuses on providing teens with enriching, healthy, fun and educational opportunities to learn and thrive. The purpose of the SOL “Strengthening Our Leadership” Youth Group is to provide information and skill development workshops, community service and leadership enhancement opportunities for youth 13 to 18 years of age.
Holiday Drive
For over 20 years, the annual Garden Grove Holiday Drive has worked to bring joy, hope, and spirit to local children and their families during the holiday season. Through the collaboration between the Buena Clinton Youth and Family Center, Magnolia Park Family Resource Center, and other partnering organizations, businesses, and residents, approximately 1,000 local children have the opportunity to unwrap a gift.
Counseling (Individual, Family, Group and Crisis)
The City of Garden Grove and Child Guidance Center have partnered to provide access to individual, family, group and crisis counseling. This service is offered with the goal of improving family functioning, increasing social support, teaching problem solving, reducing the effects of trauma, and to strengthen coping skills. Priority is given to non Medi-Cal, underinsured, and clients experiencing barriers to service. Clients may receive up to 20 sessions.
Family Support Services/ Individual Case Management
A family support specialist provides assessment, crisis intervention, ongoing support and referrals to resources and services for families with multiple needs. Every effort is made to ensure positive participation in services to stabilize the family and create a safe and healthy home environments for children.

Parenting classes are offered in English and Spanish and focus on different age groups ranging from pre-school, school age, and teens. Some classes have been specifically tailored for fathers only.
Family Reunification Family Fun Activities
Family Reunification activities are supervised and organized events for children of parents and/or caregivers in the reunification process. These activities focus on increasing the bond between parents and their children and providing an enriching and interactive environment for families.
