Request #8285

RESPONSE PRIVATE

Hi,

My name is Rebecca Heilweil, and I’m a reporter at Vox/Recode. I’m reaching out because I’d like to file a public records request related to the Tesla accident in November of last year in Garden Grove. I am referring to this incident:

https://web.archive.org/web/20221111234459/https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/1-dead-2-injured-after-car-bursts-into-flames-during-multi-car-crash-in-garden-grove/

I am requesting the following from your police department:

Any incident reports or investigations that your government created related to this accident
Any emails or other written communications that a member or members of your department sent TO Tesla or an employee of Tesla, within a month of the accident
Any emails or other written communications that a member or members of your department received from Tesla or from an employee of Tesla, within a month of the accident
Any emails sent within your department from police officers that mention the following terms (“Tesla,” “Model X” “Model S,” “Model 3,” “Model Y,” “Autopilot,” “Full Self Driving,” “Full Self-Driving,” “sudden acceleration,” or “FSD”) in the month following the incident

Please feel free to divide these into several requests if this would be more feasible. For the purpose of assessing fees, please know that I am a journalist, and that I am making these requests to learn more about an issue that is related to the public interest. In particular, the functionality of Tesla vehicles, which are getting more popular, could impact a wide range of people, including drivers and pedestrians.

Correspondence

These records are available by request from the City Clerk's Office.
