Hi,
Under the state public records law, I am a journalist writing to request data from your department as part of a national project on stolen firearms. Can your department please provide the following:
1) Number of guns that were stolen in each 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
2) Number of guns that were stolen from motor vehicles in each 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
For both Nos. 1 and 2, we are only seeking the number of guns stolen for each year, not police reports or any other details. If possible, please include only the number of stolen firearms, not lost firearms. If lost firearms must be included, please advise us.
I am a reporter with The Trace (thetrace.org), a nonprofit news organization, making this request through MuckRock’s public records request management service. These figures will be made available to the general public. This request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. Please make all invoices out to The Trace.
I would prefer the request be completed electronically.

Re: Request for Public Records – Notice of Extension

Dear Mr. Freskos:
The City of Garden Grove has received your records request dated November 18, 2016, requesting information regarding stolen firearms. This letter shall serve as notification of the City’s intent to comply with your request for public records, pursuant to the California Public Records Act (the “Act”) (Government Code §6250 et seq.).
The City is in the process of evaluating this request and is compiling records in an effort to make a determination as to whether the request seeks copies of disclosable public records in the possession of the City of Garden Grove. However, notice is hereby given that the time limit to make this initial determination under the code shall be extended by fourteen (14) days to December 12, 2016, pursuant to Government Code §6253, for the following reason:
(a) The extension of time is reasonable and necessary for the proper processing of the request.
As noted above, the City’s written determination as to whether the request seeks copies of disclosable, non-exempt and non-privileged public records in the possession of the agency shall be sent to you on or about December 12, 2016. Pursuant to the Act, thereafter any and all disclosable, non-exempt and non-privileged public records that are deemed responsive to your request will be made promptly available to you.
