Request #2230

PUBLIC

Hello,

I'm writing a story about diversity and social issues in the city, and I would like to request the records of how many individuals who identify as Muslim reside in Garden Grove. Also, if possible, I would like to request the number of hate crimes( racism incidents, hate acts against the Muslim community) that have been recorded during the years 2014, 2015, and 2016.

To Whom It May Concern:

The City does not have any documentation regarding your request pertaining to the number of individuals who identify as Muslim that reside in the city of Garden Grove, therefore there are no records responsive to that request.

Below is the response provided by the Garden Grove Police Department in regards to your request pertaining to hate crimes against the Muslim community for the years 2014, 2015, and 2016.

2014 - No hate crimes were reported in our City wherein the Muslim community was the victim.

2015 - The City had one incident reported wherein the Islamic Society of Orange County received numerous voice mails from an anonymous phone number. The voice mails were derogatory, obscene and threatening and directed at the ISOC's director. There were no other hate crimes against the Muslim community in 2015 reported to our City.

2016 - It was reported that the Islamic Society of Orange County received a letter in the mail which was demeaning to Muslims. There were no threats made in the letter. This is the only hate crime against the Muslim community reported to our City thus far, this year.
