Friday, June 11, 2021 is the last day to participate in the City of Garden Grove’s online survey to provide input on environmental justice. The public’s input will help adopt a new Environmental Justice Element to the Garden Grove General Plan, develop policies to reduce pollution in the disadvantaged communities, and establish goals to provide residents with access to healthy food, physical activity, and safe and sanitary housing. The interactive online survey is available in multiple languages at ggcity.org/housing-element.
Garden Grove residents who complete the survey and sign-up to receive email updates will have a chance to win gift cards.
According to the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool (CalEnviroScreen 3.0), Garden Grove has nine census tracts identified as disadvantaged communities. These communities are disproportionately affected by environmental pollution and other hazards.
To view the CalEnviroScreen 3.0 map of disadvantaged communities in Garden Grove, visit oehha.ca.gov/calenviroscreen.
The Environmental Justice Element is mandated by the state to be adopted by jurisdictions with disadvantaged communities to address the following goals, objectives, and policies:
• Reduction of pollution exposure and improving air quality
• Promoting access to public facilities
• Promoting access to healthy foods
• Promoting safe and sanitary homes
• Promoting physical activity
• Promoting civic engagement
The City is also updating the Housing Element, Safety Element, and Land Use Element to establish policies mandated by the state. The Housing Element will identify housing needs and goals for the 2021-2029 planning period; the Safety Element will establish policies that support laws and regulations related to safety hazards; and the Land Use Element, and Zoning Code and Map will identify available land for open space, businesses, housing, and other categories.
