Anand Rao, an 18-year Garden Grove Information Technology (IT) veteran, began his new position this week as Information Technology Director, following his appointment by City Manager Scott Stiles.
“I’m thrilled to take on this leadership role and continue the IT Department’s efforts of providing our City with continuous process improvement through the use of innovative technology and teamwork. I’m invested in the community’s success and believe strongly in providing excellent customer service,” says Rao.
Rao joined the City of Garden Grove on September 6, 2000 as an Information Systems Analyst, from which he became a manager in 2007. His appointment to IT Director, as of October 1, 2018, comes as a result of the retirement of former IT Director Charles Kalil.
"Garden Grove is a recognized leader among municipal agencies for its excellence in technology. Anand has helped usher in important periods of technological growth and development in the City, and will lead Garden Grove into many new high-tech frontiers, such as our transition to an advanced financial software system that will be a major step for the City,” says City Manager Stiles.
Rao holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems in the College of Business from Cal Poly Pomona; MBA with emphasis in Information Technology from the University of California, Irvine; and a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
An avid community volunteer, he is a current member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Garden Grove; current member and charter president of the Kiwanis Club of Orange County; and coaches children with special needs in the American Youth Soccer Organization’s (AYSO) VIP program.
His involvement in professional organizations include the Municipal Information Systems Association of California (MISAC), and MISAC Southern Chapter. He is married and has two children.
